What is polyurethane?
polyurethane is a material unknown to many, but it is present in everyone's daily life.
Denominated by the acronym PU, polyurethane is a polymer that comprises a chain of organic units joined by urethane bonds. Resulting from the chemical reaction of isocyanate and polyol, polyurethane gains versatility and can be configured in numerous products and applications. The most common and present basic form of people's daily lives is foam. An essential compound for mattresses, pillows, upholstery and a countless range of products, polyurethane is not just restricted to foam, it is possible to find polyurethane in varying degrees of hardness through soft foam from an armchair to rigid plates used as walls in civil construction.
How Polyurethane came about?
Since 1849 when Hoffmann and Wurtz released laboratory studies of reactions involving isocyanate and a hydroxyl compound, the urethane formula became known. However, it was only in 1937 with the German doctor Otto Bayer that it was possible to develop the commercial use of polyurethane and start an industry focused on the production of this material.
With the devastating effects of World War II and the scarcity of several raw materials on the market, including rubber, research and development of urethane-based products have made polyurethane technology known worldwide for meet the needs of applications such as fibers, adhesives, anticorrosive coatings, elastomers and foams. The United States and England were largely responsible for spreading new polyurethane technologies to the world.
What are the main differentials of polyurethane?
polyurethane has a wide range of applications with high performance and better cost-benefit compared to other similar products on the market. Among the main characteristics of polyurethane we can mention that it is a material of lower weight, with thermo-acoustic properties, greater resistance to corrosion and abrasion, has elastomeric memory, is resistant to cutting and tearing, is a non brittle, has a wide variety of hardnesses (ranging from the foam of a pillow to the skate wheel), is resistant to microorganisms, has low or high resilience, etc.
